Martin Singleton gave me many videos. I have chosen some short footage as raw material and removed the sound. Sound on raw footage is usually unusable due to camera mic quality and unwanted noise/sound.

Musique concrète is literally 'concrete music'. My composition utilized recorded sounds as raw material. This includes excerpts of Vivian Choi playing my piano piece Pygmalion & Galatea; my playing a keyboard-controlled synthesizer as inspired by the footage (e.g., what I heard in my head when watching a bee wiggling its bottom); and sound files of insects, birds and water. These were further selected and modified with software and other means, and assembled into montage, co-ordinating with my visual plan for the video. I was particularly careful when treating the water sound to create the impression of the beach and the sea, or it might end up sounding more like flushing the toilet!

Imagery: To co-ordinate with the musique concrète, I much enlarged selected footage, such as focusing on the movement of a few birds or just one chosen bird. I further modified the focused sections according to my music ‒ e.g., slowing down the much enlarged beautiful demoiselles and larvae so that the speed of their movements in the water fit well with the tempo of Vivian's piano playing, and used my synthesizer playing and treated water sound to create atmosphere. I adjusted dynamics to add drama to movements. I modified/accentuated movements of visual images corresponding with the "musique concrète". I used software to add movements, and direction of movement. I slowed down the zooms and added frames to smooth some footage. The message at the end ‒ Fly Wild...Fly Free ‒ reflects my thought for Hongkongers.

Shortly before last Christmas, one morning, trying to get out of bed triggered excruciating pain that froze me. As this happened almost daily, I became afraid to lie down in bed. For months, I tried to sleep in a Queen Anne style armchair which was not ideal. After consulting GPs, I was prescribed medication to ease the pain and help me sleep. From then, I have been able to sleep at night, but also sleep easily during daytime! Due to health and other problems, I was not productive. After not producing a new music video for nine months, I put my foot down and set myself a deadline to upload Fly Wild. When time's up, I stopped working on passages of Vivian and my synth playing and further visual enhancement. After uploading, I find it looks/sounds a bit different to what I saw and hear on my workstation due to the platform's processing. Ideally Fly Wild should be played on a computer linked to a pair of good loudspeakers, or at least with headphones.

Very likely, I will work on a pure Musique Concrète version of this so as to add in what's missing due to meeting my self-imposed deadline.

COMMENTS of Swan Beauty

"Anything with TWO pianos seems unwieldy, but this thing from Julian and Eri just melts together as if one player. Please tell Julian and Eri how enjoyable that piece is."

Andy Farnell, computer scientist, sound designer, author and a pioneer in the field of procedural audio.

What does Professor Stephen Matthews say about SWAN BEAUTY :

" This is very beautiful, thank you! Modern but approachable and evocative.

I also like the way the other birds can be heard on the sound track, which reminds me of Rautavaara's 'Cantus Arcticus'. (HWO: Rautavaara did it much much better!)

I do hope there will be performance/projection opportunities. Bird organizations like the RSPB or local Wildlife Trusts might be interested."

Stephen Matthews is Co-Director of the Childhood Bilingualism Research Centre at CUHK, a linguist and amateur musician.

I wrote this piece at a time when I should be in despair — my dream to be a concert pianist was shattered because of a wrist injury. I went back to the Royal Academy of Music to be retrained as a composer and this was my first composition. It was written for saxophone quartet. I later wrote a version for the piano. Raw footage was taken at Hyde Hall, one of the four Royal Horticultural Gardens in the UK, where waterfowl perch.
